  9. This README file contains supplemental information to help you install
  10. and use your printer driver software with Microsoft Windows NT.  
  11. As with most software and hardware products, some information
  12. is made available after the development of the manual.  Updated 
  13. information regarding your printer is provided in this README file.

  37. This printer driver allows you to print documents from any Windows NT
  38. application to your Canon Bubble Jet printer.  This driver is designed
  39. to function with Windows NT 4.0.

  42. 2.  System Requirements 
  43. ======================================================================
  44. The Canon BJ Raster Printer Driver for Windows NT does not require any
  45. additional system configuration beyond those required to run Windows NT.
  46. However, you can improve the performance of your Canon printer if you 
  47. keep the following in mind.
  48.  
  49. 1. The minimum amount of RAM memory required is 8 MB, although 16 MB is 
  50.    recommended.  Increasing the amount of RAM memory will result in 
  51.    faster printing and reduce compatibility problems with some 
  52.    applications. As an alternative, you can increase the amount of
  53.    virtual memory to reduce the possibility of "low memory" conditions
  54.    (although this does not improve printing performance).
  55. 2. Allow at least 5 MB of free hard disk space on the drive that 
  56.    contains your system's TEMP directory.
  57. 3. Printers     Applicable for the following Canon Bubble Jet Printers.

  63. 3. Installing the Printer Driver
  64. ======================================================================
  65. To use this printer driver with software application packages that 
  66. operate with Microsoft Windows NT, it is important that you follow the
  67. installation procedure as shown below.
  68.  
  69. Note: It is necessary to log on with full control access privileges for
  70. printer settings to install the printer driver successfully.
  71.  
  72. 1.  Start Windows NT on your system and log on as a member of the 
  73.     administrators group or power user group.
  74. 2.  Click on the [Start] button.
  75. 3.  Point to [Settings].
  76. 4.  Click on [Printers] to display the Printers folder.
  77.  
  78. Note: The icons of the existing printer drivers that are installed in
  79. your system appear in the Printers folder. If an older version of the
  80. printer driver you wish to install appears in the Printers folder, 
  81. delete the printer driver. Select the icon of the older version of the
  82. printer driver and click on [Delete] in the [File] menu. Click on the 
  83. [Yes] button when the message appears to delete the printer driver. 
  84. After deleting the older version of the printer driver, restart Windows
  85. NT.

  87. 5.  Double-click on the [Add Printer] icon to start the "Add Printer 
  88.     Wizard".
  89. 6.  Follow the instructions of the Add Printer Wizard to proceed.
  90. 7.  Click on the check box next to [LPT1:] or the port you want to use,
  91.     when the list of available ports appears. Click on the [Next] 
  92.     button to proceed.
  93. 8.  Click on the [Have Disk...] button when the list of manufacturers
  94.     and models of the printers appears.
  95. 9.  Insert the BJ Raster Printer Driver Disk into the floppy disk drive of 
  96.     your computer.
  97.     If the floppy disk drive is drive A, click on the [OK] button and 
  98.     continue with the next step.  Otherwise, type the letter of your floppy 
  99.     disk drive (such as "B:") and then click on the [OK] button.
  100. 10. Select the desired printer you want to install, and click on the [Next] 
  101.     button.
  102.     Depending on your system, if you are upgrading from a previous version
  103.     of this printer driver, you must choose [Replace existing driver] after
  104.     you select your printer even though Windows NT recommends that you keep
  105.     the existing driver. Otherwise the driver will not be upgraded 
  106.     successfully.
  107. 11. Follow the instructions of the Add Printer Wizard until the 
  108.     installation is finished.
  109.     An icon for your printer will then appear in the Printers folder.
  110.  
  111. You are now ready to print from any Windows NT software application 
  112. package. The driver is automatically set for printing in color.
  113.  
  114. Notes:
  115. - When installing multiple printers, it is necessary to specify the
  116.   default printer.
  117.   Select the icon of the printer driver you wish to set as a default printer
  118.   and click on [Set As Default] in the [File] menu.
  119. - If the installation was successful, "Canon Your-Printer-Name Properties" 
  120.   should appear for the name of the printer dialog box. Note that the
  121.   Microsoft version will display "Canon Bubble-Jet Your-Printer-Name
  122.   Properties".

  125. 4. Accessing the Printer Properties Dialog Box
  126. ======================================================================
  127. The Printer Properties dialog box contains several tabs that allow you to
  128. set up, control and maintain your Canon printer. To access the printer
  129. Properties dialog box follow the procedure as shown below.
  130.  
  131. Note: It is necessary to log on with full control access privileges for
  132. printer settings to change the settings of the printer Properties dialog
  133. box. For users without full control access privileges, you can check the
  134. current setting by following the procedure as shown below.
  135.  
  136. - To open the printer Properties dialog box from within the software
  137.   application:
  138.  
  139. 1. Click the Print command in the [File] menu of the software application.
  140.    The Print command may be referred to as [Print...], [Printer 
  141.    Settings...], etc., depending on the software application.
  142. 2. Click the [Properties] button. The Main tab of the printer Properties
  143.    dialog box opens.
  144. 3. Click on the desired tab (i.e., Main, Paper, or Control tab where
  145.    applicable) to see all of the settings, and make your changes as 
  146.    necessary.

  148. Note:
  149. Specify the [Paper Size:] and [Orientation:] settings from within the 
  150. software application whenever possible.
  151. (Click [Page Setup...], [Printer Settings...], etc., in the [File] menu 
  152. to set the paper size and orientation depending on the software 
  153. application.)
  154. The procedures for the printer settings may vary depending on the 
  155. software application. Refer to the User's Manual of your software 
  156. application for more details.

  158. - To open the printer Properties dialog box from the Windows NT 
  159.   [Start] button:
  160.  
  161. 1. Click the [Start] button, point to [Settings], and then click 
  162.    [Printers] on Windows NT.
  163. 2. Click the icon of your printer in the [Printers] folder.
  164. 3. Click [Document Defaults...] in the [File] menu.
  165.    The Main tab of the printer Properties dialog box opens.
  166.    (Check and make sure that a check mark appears beside [Set As Default]
  167.    in the [File] menu.)
  168. 4. Click on the desired tab (i.e., Main, Paper, or Control tab where
  169.    applicable) to see all of the settings, and make your changes as 
  170.    necessary.

  172. This will display the printer Properties dialog box, which contains the
  173. following tabs.
  174. Refer to the On-line Help file for more details on the selection items for 
  175. each tab by clicking on the [Help] button. Press the F1 key when the Help
  176. file is open to learn how to use Help.

  178. - Main tab
  179.   The Main tab contains the print mode settings. Simply select the
  180.   appropriate print mode so that the optimum settings for the document
  181.   and media type you wish to use are applied automatically for printing.
  182.   Specific settings for the print mode in the Main tab can be changed
  183.   readily at any time. When a suitable print mode does not exist for a
  184.   particular print job, you can partially modify an existing print mode
  185.   for optimum printing. You can save these settings as a new print mode
  186.   also.

  188. - Paper tab
  189.   The Paper tab contains the paper settings (i.e., Paper Size, Printer Paper
  190.   Size, Enlarge/Reduce, Enlarge/Reduce Rate, Orientation, Color/Monochrome,
  191.   Copies and Banner printing).
  192.  
  193. - Control tab
  194.   The control tab contains the necessary settings for the maintenance of your
  195.   printer (i.e., Print Head Cleaning, Test Prints, Change Ink Tank, Change BJ
  196.   Cartridge, Power and Custom Setting).
  197.   The Control tab is applicable for BJC-210, BJC-240, BJC-4100, BJC-4200, 
  198.   and BJC-4550, BJC-80, BJC-250, BJC-4300, and BJC-7000 only.
  199.   Note that some of the selections in the Control tab may not be 
  200.   available for some printer models.

  203. 5. Cautions, Limitations and Restrictions
  204. ======================================================================  
  205. - To delete a print job while printing when other print jobs are queued,
  206.   reset the printer once all print jobs are canceled.
  207.  
  208. - To use custom defined paper sizes, click on [Server Properties] in the
  209.   [File] menu of the Printers dialog box of Windows NT. Click on the 
  210.   "Forms" tab and create and save a new form. The minimum size that can
  211.   be saved for the BJ printers are 100 x 100 mm, and the maximum size are
  212.   shown below.

  214.     BJC-70 / BJC-4000 / BJC-600 / BJC-600e / BJC-210: 241.3 x 431.8  mm
  215.     BJC-800 / BJC-820:                          297.0 x 431.8  mm
  216.     BJC-80 / BJC-250 / BJC-4300                  241.3 x 584.2  mm
  217.     BJC-4100 / BJC-4200 / BJC-240 / BJC-7000:         241.3 x 594.2  mm

  220.   For more details on creating and saving new forms in the Forms tab, refer
  221.   to the User's Manual or On-line Help file of Windows NT.

  223. -If you install the printer driver in a system that incorporates Windows 
  224.  NT 4.0 Service Pack 2, the printer does not appear in the 
  225.  [Manufacturers/Printers] dialog box of the [Add Printer Wizard]. 
  226.  Because of this, you cannot install the printer driver as a substitute 
  227.  driver for Windows NT 3.5x when sharing the printer.
  228.  This problem only arises when Windows NT 4.0 Service Pack 2 has been 
  229.  installed in a system. It does not occur in systems incorporating 
  230.  Windows NT 4.0 Service Pack 3.
  231.  
  232. - Microsoft Word Version 7.0/97 (Microsoft Corporation)
  233.   To use custom defined paper sizes in Word Version 7.0, click on [Server
  234.   Properties] in the [File] menu of the Printers dialog box of Windows NT.
  235.   Click on the "Forms" tab and create and save a new form. Then, select this
  236.   custom paper size from within Word.
  237.  
  238. - Microsoft Excel Version 7.0/97 (Microsoft Corporation)
  239.   When using the Enlarge/Reduce printing feature, use the Enlarge/Reduce
  240.   printing feature in Microsoft Excel. For proper printing results, do not use
  241.   the Enlarge/Reduce printing feature of the printer driver.
  242.  
  243. - Lotus Organizer 2.1S/97  (Lotus)
  244.   When printing in monochrome, turn on the monochrome printing setting in
  245.   Lotus Organizer.
  246.   If the monochrome printing setting in Lotus Organizer is turned off,
  247.   printing in monochrome is not possible even if the printer driver is set
  248.   to monochrome printing.
  249.  
  250. - Lotus Word Pro 96/97 and Lotus Approach 96/97 (Lotus)
  251.   A known bug exists in Lotus Word Pro 96/97 and Lotus Approach 96/97 that 
  252.   may cause the color of the color bars in the Color sheet not to appear. 
  253.   This is not a malfunction and will not affect the function of the printer 
  254.   driver in any way.

  256. - Lotus 1-2-3 (Lotus)
  257.   When using the Enlarge/Reduce printing feature, enable the Enlarge/Reduce
  258.   feature in the printer Properties dialog box of the printer driver before
  259.   starting Lotus 1-2-3.
